Hi, one of the reasons the Germans moved from Type V11B's to V11C's was to install the S-Gerat, or Active Sonar Apparatus.However commanders disliked it as it gave away their position to aircraft etc.As to its exact requirements, under water operating, i will leave that to someone more erudite than me.
