Can anyone tell me what kind of motor was used for the silent running motor in the type XXI u-boats and if it was an electric one how was it different to the main electric motors and why would a different one be needed for silent running? Could anyone be able to tell me why another shaft wasn't connected to the front of the main electric motors and run to the room where the diesel engines were kept and hooked up to the generators through gear boxs that could run the generators at a faster speed than what the shaft would turn. That way they could eleminate the need for a fuel based engine to recharge the batteries and the need to use a snorkle to run the motors.
