Much of a wolfpack's success is dependent on the opponent and the skill of the sub skippers. Initially the Germans enjoyed a great deal of success with wolfpacks becuase it let them split the convoy's escort and vector mulitple subs on a target which a lone sub would be less effective against. However, as RN and then USN ASW got better, wolfpacks simply let Allied commanders get more kills by creating high local concetrations of U-boats.

Japanese ASW was much more poorly coordinated and wiht out radar, USN wolfpacks enjoyed phenomenal success against the IJN and her merchant marine.
