running on one shaft/ operational range
Date: November 06, 2008 10:00PM

let us say for example a type IXC u boat equiped with two type M9 V 40/46 C M.A.N
diesel engines with superchargers of the kapsell type
delivering 2,200 hp each at 480 rpm with the superchargers engaged
and 1,700 hp at 400 rpm without superchargers

with both diesels engaged and running at around ten knots the operational range would be roughly 13,500 nm

if a boat ran on one diesel at ten knots for four hour periods, alternating diesels throughout its voyage,

let us say for arguments sake the voyage is in calm weather without interuption and continuously on the surface

would this give the boat more than the 13,500 nm range

and would it make any difference to the diesels with one running at high rpms

would the fuel consumption be equal to running two diesels

would it afect the steering with only one screw turning

would this have been employed by operational boats (if it works)

the answer is probably screamingly obvious but i just cant get my brain to calculate the problem
