Type of Engines Used on Type IXC

The tpye of engines used on the IXC U-boats in the direct drive arrangement has a 2170 HP nine cylinder MAN diesel engine coupled to the main motor and to the shaft through appropriate clutches. Each main motor when operating as a motor has a rating of 493 HP and when operating as a generator can develop 710 HP. The two batteries, of 62 cells each, have the capacity to furnish, at the one hour discharge rate, the rated motor horsepower to the two main motors.

The individual characteristics of the components that made up the engine for are as follows: Cylinder diameter - 15.75 in., Stroke - 18.1 in., Displacement volume - 3530 cu. in, Nominal rating - 2170 HP., RPM - 470., Mean Turning Moment - 24,200 FT. LBS., Mean piston Velocity - 23.6 FT/SEC., Weight dry with blower - 56,100 lbs.,

Rating with Gas Turbine Supercharger is as follows: Highest 1/2 hr. rating - HP 2470, RPM 490, Mep (psi) 125, lb/Hp hr. .381. Highest 2 hr rating - HP 2320, RPM 480, MEP (psi) 119, lb/HP hr. .376. Highest Continous rating - HP 2170, RPM 470, Mep (psi) 115, lb/HP hr. .372. 3/4 Rated Power - HP 1630, RPM 426, MEP (psi) 95, lb/HP hr. .361. 1/2 Rated Power - PH 1080, RPM 373, MEP (psi) 72, lb/HP hr. .375. 1/4 Rated Power - HP 542, RPM 295, MEP (psi) 45, lb/HP hr. .381. 1/10 Rated Power - HP 217, RPM 218, MEP (psi) 24, lb/HP hr. .436

Rating with Mechanically Driven Supercharger is as follows: Highest 1.2 hr. rating - HP 2320, rpm 480, MEP (psi) 119, lb/HP hr. .404. Highest 2 hr. Rating - HP 2100, RPM 470, MEP (psi) 115, lb/HP hr .395. Highest Continuous Rating - HP 2020, RPM 460, MEP (psi) 109, lb/HP hr .388.

Working Cylinder is as follows: Compression volume - 253 cu. in. Compression ratio - 14.4/1.

Valve Timing is as floows: Exhaust open, Ahead - 45 degree before bottom center. Astern - 42 degree befor bottom center. Exhaust close, Ahead - 55 degree after top center. Astern - 21 degree after top center. Intake open, Ahead 75 degree before top center. Astern - 23 degree before top center. Intake close, Ahead - 35 degree after bottom center. Astern - 29 degree after bottom center.

Exhaust Gas Turbine Supercharger - Suction volume - 100 C.F.S, Pressure Diff. - 3.84 psi. RPM (Normal) - 9400.
