Hello Phil, er al:
In the U.S. the engineers at the torpedo research facility in Newport, RI were building the Mark 16 (for submarines) torpedo and the Mark 17 (for destroyers) torpedo using NAVOL (70% hydrogen peroxide). The converted Fleet Submarine, the
USS PIPER (SS-409) carried the Mark 16 torpedo for many years.
Post War, the Navy awarded a contract to Fairchild Aircraft Company to build a
midget submarine using NAVOL to power a small diesel engine. It was designated the (X-1) and is presently located at the NAUTILUS Museum in New London , CT.
Have a grear day,
ROBERT M.
