That's right, glass columns are behind the cover.

These scales are in kg. Your "photo one" presents water
level gauges for port "regulating" and "regulating and
reserve fuel oil tanks" ("Regelzelle" and "Regelbunker"
Backbord).
Water level gauge (1) has scale (2) scaled up to 5500 kg and
is related to the "Regelzelle" with total capacity of 7,6 m^3
Water level gauge (4) has scale (3) scaled up to 3500 kg and
is related to the "Regelbunker" with total capacity of 4,7 m^3
Similarly "photo two": tanks at the starboard side ("Regelzelle"
and "Regelbunker" Steuerbord):
Water level gauge (6) has scale (5) scaled up to 5500 kg and
is related to the "Regelzelle" with total capacity of 7,6 m^3
Water level gauge (7) has scale (8) scaled up to 3500 kg and
is related to the "Regelbunker" with total capacity of 4,7 m^3
> Are all the four scales showing trim tank levels ?
These scales are for "regulating" and "regulating and reserve fuel
oil tanks" port and starboard (that means "Regelzelle" and "Regelbunker" ).
Trim tanks (which are located in the bow and aft torpedo room) have no such
scales. As I mentioned in previous post, the water level is measured by means
of the dipstick. These two tanks are connected by means of the pipe, which
also contain flow-meter. So the amount of water transfered from one tank to
other (which results in the trim moment) can be thoroughly controlled.
