torpedo lead angle computer

I wonder how the lead angle computer in WW2 subs exactly worked.
Couldn`t find any information about this issue.
Must have been a pure mechanic device or was it a very simple electronic machine?
How was the compution tranferred to the torpedo, was the angle inserted by a screw showing 360 degrees magnetic north or a relative bearing to the u-boat axis?
I have no idea....
And even more interesting: how did they do it in WW1?
Has any body a link?
