My nephew flew on P-3 ASW aircraft equipped with MAD gear. The output was a line recorder that showed the instantaneous magnetic field under the aircraft. If one flew over a submarine or other vessel, one would see a blip in the trace. One could show the same thing on an oscilloscope.
