Target Priorities

Hi all,

I'm researching the war patrol of U-870, KorvettenKapitan Ernst Hechler. On 20 December 1944, the submarine torpedoed a U.S. LST and a U.S. destroyer which were part of a southwest bound slow convoy from England. Were the U-boat captains given target priorities before commencing a war patrol, or did they seek out targets of opportunity? U-870's war patrol started 10 November 1944 and ended 20 February 1945.
