Voice Tubes

I think it interesting how the Americans and Germans addressed the same technological challenges in their subs in different ways.
Here’s something I’ve wondered about: German U-boats made extensive use of “voice tubes,†for intra-sub communication. (Wasn’t there even a bridge-to-control tube…which I assume would have to be plugged upon diving?)
The American fleet boats used the microphone/speaker system between compartments (and bridge).
Which was better? What is the quality of transmission of speech through a curving, thin voice tube? These voice tubes always seemed a little archaic when compared to say, the German torpedo firing computer.
Any thoughts?
