<HTML>John:
HMCS Pondmaker:
Launched: April 21, 1944
Builder: Canadian Vickers Ltd. Montreal.
Wartime Duty: Escort Group EG-8 as of December, 1944.
St. John's to mid-ocean - 8 round trips in total until VE Day.
Received tropicalization refit at Lunenburg, NS in 1945 but was shortly thereafter
paid off at Sydney, NS at the date Vin has mentioned (25-11-45).
Was initially named for North Battleford but could not take the name because the corvette HMCS Battleford already had taken it.
Its camouflage was rare for an Atlantic convoy ship because it had the paint scheme given to west-coast ships.
Displacement: 2 216 tons (full load)
Dimensions: 301feet 6" x 36 feet 7" x 12 feet 9" (average)
Armamment: 1 twin 4-inch gun
1 12 pounder
4 twin 20-mm guns
1 hedgehog
4 depth charge throwers
up to 200 depth charges.
Hope this helps.
Good luck finding more information!
Might be able to locate an archive photo of this ship for you.
Let me know.
