Bob Culver:

36 ounces of sphero-hexagonal black powder was used with pyralin wads to make up
the torpedo impulse charges.

The charges were prepared by the senior torpedoman under the supervision of the
chief torpedoman.

When the ship was in a combat zone, the one charge was loaded into all ten impulse
chambers and the powder was kept topside in a special watertight locker aft of
No. 1 torpedo tube mount.

The MK VI magnetic influence exploder mechanisms were de-activated by
removing the pick-up rod from the warhead.

Upon receiving the ALNAV to remove the exploder mechanisms from the warheads, they were stowed in their appropriate steel boxes and stowed below.

All MK XV torpedoes (like yours) used the MK VI magnetic-influence exploder
mechanism. It was composed of the magnetic feature and the contact feature. When the torpedo was launched, the brass impeller turned and caused the mechanical arming of the contact exploder; after about 481 turns the exploder was armed.
Also, the impeller drove the DC generator that provided the voltage to operate
the electronic circuit and charge the 8 MFD capacitor, which was used to detonate the 65-grain fulminate mercury detonator. There was no other exploder mechanism
in the Navy's inventory to be used in the MK XV torpedo.

Regards,

ROBERT M.
