<HTML>The "Fort la Montee" was lying in the harbour of Algiers when a fire broke out, both on the ship and the adjoining berth. A tug towed the vessel out into the Bay of Algiers and HMS Arrow went alongside to help fire-fighting.
The forepart of the freighter blew up, badly damaging the tug and the destroyer, which caught fire and was partially destroyed by exploding ammunition. The aft section of the freighter was scuttled by gunfire from a British submarine to prevent another explosion. The forepart burned for several days while the destroyer was first beached and then salvaged but only partially repaired.
I don't know the number of casualties but I believe they were very high. I can try to find more informations if you need them.
Hope this helps
Best regards
