as far as I can ascertain, there is no difference between hp and HP (see below). The different systems of indicating the output of the various types of machinery refer to a form of convenience:
SHP is used to indicate electric and turbine;
IHP is used to indicate expansion steam engines;
BHP is used for internal combustion (diesel) engines;
NHP or nominal horsepower is an off-the-wall figure withot any resemblance to actual output and should never be taken into acccount.
There is a difference between the imperial and the metric horsepower, this could possibly be related to hp and HP; I cannot locate the relevant paper right now but I seem to recall the difference was in the area of 0.07%
in favor of the imperial units, ergo 100,000 imperial HP equals 100,700 metric, really not enough to cretae major discrepancies when quoting sources.
