HAZARD - 'Halcyon' class minesweeper
875/1330 tons 245'2" x 33'6"
2 shafts/steam turbines/2000 ihp = 17 knots
armed: (original):2 x 4", 4 x machine guns, depth charges
by 1945 = 1 x 4", 6 x 20mm
Built by Gray (West Hartlepool); laid down May 1936 launched 26 Feb.1937 completed November 1937
Service:
1937 - served in 1st minesweeping flotilla (Portland)
9.39 - part of the Home Fleet; initially based at Chatham
4.41 - based at Greenock
lat.41 - deploys to Murmansk
12.1941 - part of escort for Russian convoy PQ.6 ; fights action with four German destoyers 17.12.41
5.42 - part of escort for Russian convoy PQ.16
24.10.42 - damaged whilst sweeping mines in the Yugorsky strait, Russia; repaired at Hull
4.43 - 12th minesweeping flotilla, Gibraltar
6.43 - 17th minesweeping flotilla, Malta
2.44 - 46th escort group, Malta
10.44 - returned UK; after refit joined 1st minesweeping flotilla at Portsmouth
26.7.45 - damaged in collision with 'Jason' whilst sweeping in North Sea
6.46 - paid off and vessel stripped; laid up at Harwich
22.4.1949 - sold for scrapping; broken up at Grays</HTML>
