Hi Richard,
Calypso was sweeping against Italian traffic in the area south of Crete. At 0050 hrs she was spotted by Alpino Bagnolini from 5.000 metres range. The sub remained on the surface and closed to within 1.500 m, firing a single torpedo which impacted the CL between the bridge & the fore funnel @ 0059 hrs. Calypso sank @ 0330 in position 33.45 N, 24.32 E, SSE of Gavdos island, in waters exceeding 500 m depth. There were 39 dead in the sinking (1 officer, 38 POs & men). The depth of the wreck makes diving impossible except by ROV.
HTH, best wishes, Brian
