Edinburgh was definitely sunk in May 1942 in the Barents Sea - her wreck has been located and dived on and much of the gold she was carrying recovered - there have been a couple of books and a TV documentary on the subject. She did take part in a Malta convoy in July of 1941 (not 1942) - Operation Substance, which sailed Gib. 21 Jul arriving Malta 24 July, returning Gib. 27 July 1941.

Kaplan and Currie are obviously wrong - perhaps they confused the 1941 convoy with 1942?
