Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't British Royal Navy squid projectiles the explode-on-contact type? I am not aware that they had any fuze that permitted depth setting.
As for pattern, from photographs I have seen, the squids seem to have sat on spigots which were each slightly angled to create the required pattern.
I have seen video film showing squid launches and the diamond pattern is very clear to see.
