Dear Barbara
I think your father Frederick Hayzen Smith commanded an Admiralty tug during the secon world war.The tug was called HMS BUSTLER.
In January 1944 he rescued a ship called the s.s Empire Treasure which had lost a propeller while en routre to the the UK with 2000 tonnes of munitions. So began one of the most epic and apparently forgotten feats of seamanship The Bustler towed the Empire Treasure for over 1000 miles in hideous sea conditions - at times the tow ended up ahead of the tug - and finally made port at Newport in Wales.
The Empire Treasure was eventually sold to my father's partners company called
Williamson & Co Hong Kong and was renamed the S.S.Inchleana.
I cannot hink why this feat of seamanship has been forgotten and I would be most interested to hear more from you.
Kind regards
Roderick Mulliomn
