Hello Ton,

Many thanks for your prompt answer but the difference in position has left me speechless! I may have an explanation if this is based on Rohwer's "Axis submarine successes of World War Two". I have both the German and the English edition. The positions are given as AN 8511 (which is what Lüth reported and I believe is roughly correct) and 53.40 N/04.00 E which is probably a typographical error.
The position given on the French Navy site is 52.47.31 N/03.49.12 E.

AN 8511 translates into 52.45 N/03.35 E. The position given on the French Navy site is 52.47.31 N/03.49.12 E, this makes the position of U.9 about 8 miles too far west.

DORIS should have been between 52.40 and 52.50 N and East of 04.00 E. However she had just received the order to go there a few hours before (probably upon surfacing) to take over the position occupied by HMS SHARK which was being moved to the north. DORIS would had normally come on a SE course and initially the KTB of U.9 reports her on a 140 course which is logical. It is quite possible that she sighted U-9 but hesitated, believing her to be HMS SHARK and this was fatal.
