Just a few as teaser:
CA - cruiser, A type (Washington Treaty of 1922)
CL - cruiser, light
CV - carrier, heaVier than air
A, prefix for all auxiliaries, second letter will indicate the specific sub-category, eg
AO - oiler
AH - hospital
Y is the prefix for all Yard & harbor craft
YDG - dredge
YT - tug
etc, No type of ship is designated by a single letter, therefore destroyers are DD, battleships BB & so on.
