tragic accident on Devilfish?

A few months after the war was over, I was assigned as part of a caretaker crew to Devilfish at Mare Island. As I remember, there was a story to the effect that when she was being prepared for mothballing, there was a ceremony on deck for some of the departing crew. The lifelines had been taken down, and when the ceremony was over, one of the crew leaned back into where the lifeline would have been and fell overboard, hitting his head on the hull and disappearing into the water. The body was never found.

Does anybody know anything about this incident? Was the story true, and, if so, did it pertain to Devilfish or some other submarine?
