When you say "nameplate", do you mean a metallic nameplate
(which does not wash up on a beach) or a varnished mahogany one about 1-1/4" thick and about five feet long, with 6" brass letters and numerals USS TRUMPETFISH (SS-425) attached w/ brass screws?
If this is the case, some topside gang member failed to remove it
from its temporary mounting on the sail and it came off during a
dive or heavy seas. Shame on him........
The boat operated with the NATO forces during "Operation Mariner" after WWII.
