Good evening all,
I received a copy of the following and I would be grateful if anyone could give an explanation.

"I have had an unusual item in my shipping memorabilia collection for
many years and I was hoping that you could shed some light on to its
origin.
It is a cast iron replica of the iron cross and measures across flats
6.1/4" x 6.1/4".
As you can see from the attached photo the front shows the name of the
trawler "Fish Trade" with its home port of fleetwood and the date of
1915.
On the back is a typed inscription which reads as follows:

"1914-18 The Great War
This replica of the German "Iron Cross" was cast by Messrs Thomas
Hamlin & Sons steam trawler owners of Fleetwood, Lancashire, to
commemorate the sinking of a German submarine by gunfire during its
attack on unarmed fishing vessels.
The Admiralty awarded medals and they were presented to the crew by the Senior Naval Officer of Fleetwood, Commander Abbott R.N. at a luncheon given in their honour early in 1915.
The trawler was owned by the donors of this cross and was one of the first fishing vessels to be armed after many vessels had been sunk and their crews left to perish by German submarines in the Great War of 1914-1918".Have you seen one of these before?"

Thank & regards
Roger
