Hello John,
Brian C beat me to it, but here is some more on the officers of HMS Gardenia.
CO= Lt Com H Hill, RNR
XO= Tmpy Lt LT Howard, RNR (joined the ship sometime after July 18th, '42)
plus three Tmpy Sub Lt: SJ Lawrence, RNVR,VW Gray, RNVR and FD Hayes, RNVR

You might find this of interest. It is a summary of the part played by HMS Stanley, lost while escorting HG76:

HG76 was guarded by the 36th Escort group. HMS Stanley, out of Gibraltar, joined the convoy on 14 December 1942 as additional protection. They were spotted by an FW200 shortly before 19:00 the following day. At 09:30 on the 17th, a report of a U-boat 22 miles astern of the convoy was investigated by five escorts. No contact was made and the five set out to rejoin the convoy, then at 12:47 Stanley sighted a U-boat on the surface and all five were ordered to converge on the target at full speed, HMS Exmoor and Blankney opening fire and Stanley joining in. The U-boat was sunk at 13:30, Stanley picking up four survivors before rejoining the convoy.

The following morning at 09:06 it was once again Stanley who spotted a U-boat shadowing the convoy six miles off the port quarter and raced to the scene. The U-boat dived and Stanley dropped a series of depth charges at the estimated position (her ASDIC wasn’t working) before being joined by Blankney who quickly got a contact on ASDIC and dropped five charges. With Blankney passing bearings to Stanley, the two continued the attack until the U-boat surfaced. The German crew scuttled their craft as they abandoned it and, despite both British ships sending boarding parties, the sub sank. Blankney took aboard the survivors and also the four prisoners from Stanley. Stanley had dropped 32 DCs, Blankney 10.

Approximately 18:30 the next evening, December 18th, Stanley was investigating an independent merchant vessel sighted on the port of the group when a report arrived of a U-boat in the same area. HMS Convolvulus, Stanley and Penatamon (spelling?) swept the area until Convolvulus reported torpedoes fired at her. The group followed back along the track of the torpedoes and carried out searches, finding nothing. At 21:36 HMS Stork, still with the convoy, ordered the three ships to rejoin, Stanley zigzagging astern and the other two ahead of the convoy.

Stanley sighted and evaded torpedoes fired at her at 03:45, but the next attack was successful. At 04:08 a single torpedo struck just forward of amidships, in the area of the canteen. The ship listed to starboard immediately before breaking in half. The stern was gone within five minutes while the bows upended and remained afloat about 45 minutes.

Stork and Samphire picked up survivors but the CO, Lt Comm. D Ryan Shaw, OBE, RN was not found. There were 136 lost in total.
