tracer colours

When Allied warships operated together, was there any protocol or standing order as to what colour tracer was used by which ship? I am thinking specifically about a night action involving a group of Hunt class destroyers with each using a different colour tracer from their main armament. The ships came together at very short notice including a couple ordered to leave coastal convoy escort duty for immediate attachment to the improvised group. The r/t records reveal no signals once at sea on the subject, and the operational orders don’t mention it, so I assume (dangerous) that the allocation of colour was done by routine or rank.

Any ideas?
