25.04.1940 Commanding Officer, Skipper John (Jakey) Crockett HMS Hammond (anti-submarine trawler) (ship sunk off Andalsnes Norway) Managed to get all crew members ashore safely, and hid from the occupying German army, and travelled North then West to the port of Molde. While approaching the city during day-light they watched the Luftwaffe bombing the town. Then the bombers left and returned to their airfield presumably to fuel up. Around five o'clock the Skipper and his crew were taken by surprise! Not by the enemy, but by the sight of the HMS Glasgow sailing into Molde and tying up alongside the wharf. The Skipper, got his men together and he led his crew marching down to the wharf and surprised the British forces on the wharf. The Captain of the Glasgow was very surprised, and took them onboard. Later that night the crew of the HMS Hammond were on their way back to Scotland! Having escaped capture by the German occupying forces, their plan was to find any kind of boat and get out of Norway, even if there were only rowing boats. They were all former North Sea fishermen and crossing the North Sea was no obstacle to these war weary men from Aberdeen.
