MALDIVE ISLANDS

Hi,
My brother was stationed on one of the Maldive Islands during ww11. He was a wireless telegraphist.
He mentioned that at one time,a Japenese u-boat surfaced in the lagoon and sank their supply ship by gunfire.
He also stated that there were only six sailors on the island.
Could anyone tell me which Island it was, that he was stationed on, and if anyone has any additional information about this, i would be most grateful.
