I am not sure if this is the correct forum for my enquiry. This is my first post on your website.
Congratulations on such a fantastic website.
I am looking for information about a converted trawler that has been reported as sunk by U-714.
I have the shipbuilder’s half-hull model. It was the Grimsby Trawler ST Sweeper. She was sold to A/S Norrdhavet, Kristiansand, Norway in 1936. It was requisitioned by the Norwegian Navy in 1939 and apparently changed its name to Nordhav ll. It served with the Royal Navy as a minesweeper No. FY 1906. She was torpedoed by U714 off Dundee on 10 March 1945, whilst serving with 71 minesweeper group based at Dundee. From your website I see that U714 was sunk 4 days later.
I have the Registration details from the Grimsby Archives, but I do not have details of Nordhav ll to confirm that it was the same vessel as Sweeper. Some doubt has been raised.
Looking at U714 on your website it lists as a success “1 auxiliary warship sunk for a total of 425 GRTâ€.
ST Sweeper was registered as a trawler at 395 tons. After her conversion, her armaments would have increased her tonnage.
Does anyone know the name of the “auxiliary warship†credited to U714?
