Hi there David,
Thank you for your response.
Your candidate seems just about spot on. Many thanks.
Mention of it being a survey vessel is, again, attractive. Loch Laxford is a tidal sea loch. The far north-western coast of Sutherland was surveyed in detail towards the end of the 19th century following the first somewhere near accurate marine survey of circa 1850-60. Even now the only safe harbour between Ullapool and Loch Eriboll is Kinlochbervie, which was not developed until the 1960s. The nearby Loch Clash was used by smaller coastal vessels throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries; Loch Laxford is the nearest alternative sheltered haven.
Where can I find details of the 1888 ship and its service? Presumably it served in World War I and was broken up immediately thereafter?
My thanks again, and best wishes.
