The USS Roper, which sank the U-85, 14 April 1942, was commanded by Lt. Commander Hamilton W. Howe. In the course of my current research on civil defense, I discovered that after his retirement from the USN as a Rear Admiral, Howe became the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Civil Defense Director. He held this post at least until the mid-1960s.
Random I realize, but being U-boat related I thought some might find it interesting. The last place I thought I would encounter a U-boat connection would be with nuclear civil defense in North Carolina!
