Vessel (HMS) Petunia

I am trying to trace my paternal grandfather, a Lieutenant Hayes RN, who apparently commanded a vessel by the name of 'Petunia' during the first world war, which was sunk by a U Boat. There are records of two vessels of that name being sunk by U boat. One being a merchant vessel the other a fishing vessel. It is concievable that the vessel could have been a conversion for naval use.
Is there any way of tracing the captain and crew of the vessel? My grandfather was apparently not on board when the vessel was hit!
Any help would be gratefully received.
