I'm trying to find as many crew names as possible for the U-20 that sailed on April 30th 1915 under the command of Walther Schwieger and that sank the Lusitania. His usual First Watch Officer Rudolph Zentner did not accompany him because he was - according to his own account - on a wireless telegraphy course. Another of his regular watch officers Werner Furbringer had just moved on to undergo commander training or to take his own command so it seems his 1WO on the patrol was Raymond Weisbach. I think his Chief Engineer was Kurt Szitnick (or Szitnik) Schwieger himself refers to Helmsman Lanz (no first name) and his ability to recognise ships from the outlines and judge their speed. Some accounts suggest that Lanz had been in the merchant marine before the war, even working for the White Star line. Then there's Oberleutnant Walther Scheffler who seems to have been 1WO when the U 20 runs aground in Nov '17 - another patrol Zentner misses - and has to be scuttled. Might he have been serving with Schwieger in '15? Any further names or information from family members etc gratefully received. Incidentally the list of crew members who perished when Schwieger's next command the U 88 disappeared with all hands lost contains none of the names above though Zentner says Scwieger took a lot of U-20's crew with him to U 88.
