I was, for several summers in late 60és and early 70és, searching for U-56.
It did not sink in russian wathers. It sunk a (British?) steamer called "Ivanhoe", after having taken the crew onboard the U-boat just east of Vardoe.
There was some gunfire between Russian ships and the U-boat.
The (british) crew was put ashore in the Tana fjord, at a small village called Finnkongkleila. The U-boat had dammage to the hull, and the crew and pristoners had to stand in the front of the U-boat to balance her.(she had to be leaking pretty much)
She left "Finnkongkjeila" before Norwegian authorities was alarmed, and went south against Germany. No one has ever heard form her since. There is a U-boat Wreck that is unidentified just outside the Tana fjord at 45 meters of wather, Pos 70.56 N 29.05 E it might be her or an Russian Submarine. No known British,Norwegian or German sub was lost in this position.
