<HTML>Chris,
In World War I, German ordered eight "merchant U-boats" -- large submarines designed to trade with the U.S. The British were blockading shipments to and from Germany, so this offered a means to still access the U.S. for supplies.
Only two of the eight sailed before the U.S. entered the war. The Deutschland made two trips. The Bremen disappeared on her first trip.
When it became obvious that the U.S. would enter the war, the surviving merchant U-boats were converted into U-cruisers. They carried the numbers U 151 to U 157. The Deutschland became U 155.
Germany was required to surrender all submarines postwar. Three of the five survivors were scuttled by the Allies, the two others (U 155 and U 157) were broken up.
Best wishes,
Michael</HTML>
