<HTML>SJH,

Excellent question. The sinkings of GIBEL HAMAM on September 14th and KENDAL CASTLE on September 15 have both been traditionally assigned to UB 103. Obviously, if UB 103 were sunk outbound, as there is every reason to believe, then there's a problem.

The solution is that the two steamers were sunk by UB 104, which sailed on September 6th and took the northern route (around Scotland) to the Channel. She was at 55 20N, 10 20W on the 11th, and should have gotten to the Lyme Bay area by about the 15th. We know she was definitely on station by the 16th, when she sank the ETHEL off Berry Head (KENDAL CASTLE was also lost just off Berry Head!)

UB 104 did not return from patrol. she may have been lost in the North Barrage. There is also an UBIII wreck off the north coast of Cornwall that could be her as well.

Best wishes,

Michael</HTML>
