<HTML>Nice story, but it does not square with the account given by the commanding officer of the 'Fairy' (Lieutenant Geoffrey Barnish RNR) and contained in Tapprell-Dorlings book 'Endless Story' - who is Grant?
In this account, the UC-75 was first struck by a merchant ship in the convoy; the 'Fairy' was the only destroyer present, and was the SO, so would not have to ask for any permission; Barnish states that he always stayed slightly astern of the reamost ship's beam. They heard the thud of the merchant ship hitting the sub., closed to investigate, sighted the sub and challenged her repeatedly before running over her stern. She then circled around, firing about forty shells at the sub from her 6 pounder, before ramming the sub. again, this time amidships.
I tend to believe Barnish, rather that Lightoller.</HTML>
