In all likelihood, i'ts never been worked out. Unfortunately, Spindler did not identify/work out the target of the vast majority of the unsuccessful attacks. The best I can do is give you a list of U-boats that were in area. From that it would be possible to consult the appropriate KTBs looking for a torpedo attack off the south coast of Ireland on a large steamer on that date.(If you're lucky, there's a mention of an unsuccesful torpedo attack in Spindler, but that's hit and miss.)
A quick look at my database suggests that U 62 and U 54 are possibilities. There may be more, I'll check some more.
