Hello can anyone shed light on an incident mentioned by Gayer ?
One of the POWs from U12 (sunk March 10th 1915)was war
pilot Volckner. Gayer relates how this enterprising gentleman escaped from his prison camp, made his way to Hull then somehow effected a rendezvous with U16 which returned Volckner to Heligoland. My understanding is that the war pilot died when his next boat was sunk.
Can anyone out there verify this story. Would a U boat be risked to rescue a war pilot in this manner ? I can't imagine the British admiralty would do the same for an escaping junior navigating officer.
regards
