Hi Michael and Yves,
many thanks for your prompt replies. Michael, I would agree with what you say. The family say Keeper was torpedoed off Donegal-though I am not sure what basis they have for this claim. It might be that they are right that she sunk off Donegal, though the cause would seem open to question. It would seem odd to me that a U-boat captain would "waste" a torpedo on a ship of 572 tons, when, as you point out, he would have had other options to sink her.
Bannatynes were big grain merchants in Limerick at the time. They are long since gone, but their mill remains. When Keeper sank, her crew were mainly Clarecastle men, and the Other Half's grand uncle was among them. Clarecastle is a small village in County Clare.
