Hi James
The 24.9.1916, 40 nm east of Whitby, U57 sunk the english fishingvessels; "Devonshire" 148 t. "Briton" 134 t. "Aphelion" 197 t. og "Albatross" 158 t. Thereafter they sunk the norwegian steamer "Laila" 753 t. loaded with wood from Arkhangelsk on the way to England.
In the night they sunk within 10 hours 9 fishingvessels. With a dingy from the steamer "Fisherprince" Oberleutnant zur See von Ruckteschell rowed to the fishingvessels, once a time and took their crow onboard in the dingy and at the same time they sunk the fishingvessels without a sound by opening the seavents. Because of the darkness they managed to surprice all the crews on the fishingvessels on no one escaped. Here are the names on the 9 fishingvessels; "St. Hilda", "Trinidad", "Marguerite", "Loch Ness", "Nil Desperandum", "Otterhound", "Sunshine", "Otter" og "Tarantula".
The next day after dawn, they furthermore sunk; "Gamecock", "Harrier", "Quebec", "Seal" og "Cynthia" by shelling them after the crew had left them. Afterwards U57 stopped a norwegian steamer and ordered them to pick up all the crews from fishingvessels.
Regards
