Upon review of U 24 and U 38's KTBs, It would seem U 27 sank Peña Castillo. U 24 is clearly out. U 38 also apparently wasn't responsible. The reason I say apparently is that there's a page or (more likely) two of her KTB is actually missing (likely just not photocopied), so there's a three day jump from early 18th to the 21st. However, Valentiner did prepare a list of ships sunk, and Peña Castillo is not on that list nor are there any unidentified ships sunk. In addition, the plot map survives, and shows U 38 was south and/or west of area where Peña Castillo was sunk.
