anti flash gear

I have read an illustrated book regarding the royal navy in wwi band in the pictures the crew of a dreadnought battleship are wearing anti flash hoods and gloves.but after reading several passages on the battle of jutland were one survivor talks of the possible benefits of introducing a kind of anti flash gear(he mentions asbestos hoods)i was unsure of what to make of the illustrations.does anyone know when this kind of equipment was introduced?
