Hello Michael and Clio,

As far as I know,on board of any ship/any time there are at least, 2 different departments : Deck-people/officers and “Machinists”, means Engineers.
The head of this last department is the CHENG, the Chief – Engineer. A “machinist” is thus not related to the deck department; so he can’t become a “commander” of a ship !
“Stockers” are well related to the “Machine/Engine” department.
