I take your point, the vessel was not part of the AP and I do not think it had encountered a U boat.
The NID section of Admiralty tended to embellish any account it could get hold of for propaganda purposes and I note that this story first broke surface in one of the monthly U boat action accounts, having been picked up from the Newcastle Journal.
