I have come across the following account of an early (ie.pre-April 1915,when fishing vessels in home waters begun to be sunk by U-boats) account of an attack and wonder which U-boat was involved (Source: BE Sargeaunt, MVO, OBE, The Isle of Man and the Great War, slightly edited). Thanks, anyone.

On 23 February, a Peel fishing boat was attacked by an enemy submarine. The Girl Emily had put to sea at about 4 pm and was fishing for cod about 10 miles off Peel when a German submarine appeared and came alongside. The commander asked the skipper, John Hughes, whether he was fishing and when told he was, brought his submarine round to the Girl Emily’s starboard quarter. When about 100 yards away, he opened fire. Hughes was at the tiller at the time, and the first shot struck a stanchion barely a yard away from his feet. He was severely wounded in the face with splinters, some of them entering around his eyes and affecting his eyesight. The U-boat then fired three further shots, which penetrated the bulwarks and the sail of the fishing boat. The Germans then came alongside and demanded the catch of fish.
