Hi Michael,
I don't have the KTB but I have Spindler Vol. V.
There's no notice about minelaying of S.M. U 64. Morath attacked "Giuseppe Verdi" in the dark evening of Feb. 2nd with gunfire but scored no shell hits. He ceased fire because the lack of spot light.
If the steamer suffered any damage it must have been a shell hit which has not been observed by the sub's crew.
