Freddy,
A Mr. Guthe from Leipzig had come over to West Hartlepool in 1875. He set up as a coal exporter and in 1893 as a shipowner and built up a fair sized fleet and it was for his company the the "Barbara" was built, but whether she was still trading for his company when sunk, I am unable to establish. The company merged with the West Hartlepool S.N.Co in 1899 financed by Sir Christopher Furness with capital of £500,000. In 1904 Mr Guthe became Chairman after buying out Sir Chrisopher Furness and continued in the liner and tramping trade.
