ww1 u-boats and gold

Please help clear up a discusion I've been having with some friends. Is there any truth in the story of WW1 u-boats carrying gold or currency or anything of value to bribe the way out of trouble or capture, or to help in any way in the event of landing in neuteral areas? Many thanks John Haskell
